Is Sprinkler Installation a do-it-yourself project?

Installation of sprinkler systems should be handled by professionals, unless you’re good at making complex calculations. If you do decide on a do-it-yourself sprinkler installation, acquaint yourself first with whatever inspection codes for irrigation your town may have.

How do I benefit from an in-ground sprinkler system?

Since hand watering is done on a random basis, and at irregular intervals, an automatic sprinkler system will actually, in most cases, use less water. It will also disperse the water at an even rate, and for a predetermined amount of time. This allows you to water sunny and shady areas for different periods of time, and to water when it is most efficient. One obvious benefit is the ability to continue a watering program while you are away.

back

What are the pros of automatic irrigation systems? Aren't they wasteful?

Automatic irrigation systems are convenient, especially for those who travel. If installed and programmed properly, automatic irrigation systems can even save you money and help in water conservation. Dead lawn grass and plants need to be replaced, and that can be expensive. But the savings from automatic irrigation systems can go beyond that.

Watering with a hose or with an oscillator wastes water. Neither method targets plant roots with any significant degree of precision. Automatic irrigation systems can be programmed to discharge more precise amounts of water in a targeted area, which promotes water conservation.

back

How much does a sprinkler system cost?

It depends upon several factors which would include; the size of the property, complexity of the landscape, and the water service to name just a few. Each property is carefully reviewed, measured, and designed specifically for you and your needs.

back

Does a Sprinkler System help increase my property value?

Yes, particularly with our climate. In the future, virtually all houses will need a sprinkler system to better handle periods of moisture and drought.  Sprinkler Systems are a key feature that homebuyers are looking for when considering a new house.

back

Are all sprinklers systems the same?

No. The materials, design, warranty and the people installing it make the difference. We don’t use cookie-cutter designs but rather develop a system tailored specifically to your yard and landscape.  And, we use the highest quality commercial-grade products installed by experienced personnel.

back

Are all sprinkler parts the same?

While some parts are similar the guarantee and how the manufacturer stands behind them makes the difference.  Pacific Lawn Sprinklers uses on the best parts and equipment to ensure worry-free performance for the life of the sprinkler system.

Why choose Pacific Lawn Sprinklers vs. the other guy?

back

Will the installation disrupt my lawn?

We take great care during the installation process to make sure there is as little disruption to your property as possible. We use a vibratory plow to install the lines. Pipe and wires are "pulled" underground through a small slit in the turf to minimize damage to the lawn. We also carefully hand dig in flower beds and around utility markings. After a couple of weeks from the installation date, the only visible signs of your new sprinkler system should be a greener lawn and healthier plants.

back

How long will it take to install a sprinkler system?

Most jobs take one day to install, start to finish.

back

What's the difference between "spray" lawn sprinkler heads and "rotor" heads?

Two common types of lawn sprinkler heads are “spray” heads and “rotor” heads.

Spray lawn sprinkler heads are sometimes designed to pop up out of the ground when the sprinkler system is activated, while others rest on pipes that remain aboveground at all times. Spray heads discharge a large volume of water in a relatively short amount of time, giving them, in irrigation lingo, a “high application rate.” For this reason, sprinkler systems with spray heads are most suitable for even surfaces, not slopes. If you do have to use a spray head on a slope, program your sprinkler system such that water is discharged over several shorter periods. This will help you avoid wasteful run-off.

By contrast, rotor lawn sprinkler heads have a lower application rate, so they’re simpler to use on slopes. Rotor heads also apply water more uniformly than do spray heads, making them more suitable for watering larger areas. For people who wish to irrigate large areas of lawn, sprinkler systems with rotor heads would be a logical choice.

back

What is a backflow device, and why do I need one on my sprinkler system?

This device prevents water from the irrigation system from "flowing backwards" into the drinking water supply. By State plumbing code, a backflow prevention device is required for sprinkler systems that operate from a potable water supply such as city or well water. Our licensed Master Plumber will install this device if your new sprinkler system requires it.

back

How can rain sensors work with irrigation timers for water conservation?

Plants get thirstier in summer than during spring and fall, so program your irrigation timer accordingly, rather than always keeping the irrigation timer on the same setting. This will promote water conservation, as will watering at the right time of day and overriding irrigation timers with rain sensors.

The time of day when you irrigate is a factor in water conservation. If you program irrigation timers to go on early in the morning, you’ll lose less water to evaporation than if you were to irrigate in the heat of the day.

For optimal water conservation, it will be necessary to override the irrigation timer of your automatic system, if your area receives heavy rains the night before your system is programmed to run. You’d only be pushing up your water bill unnecessarily. If you’d rather not have to bother overriding your system manually in such cases, install a rain sensor on your roof. Rain sensors can be tied into automatic systems, shutting them off for you after a period of rain.

back

What type of maintenance does the lawn sprinkler system require?

Basic maintenance is required to ensure the effective operation of your system. The most important services are the fall winterization and the spring start-up. In the fall, we shut down the system and blow out the lines to eliminate the risk of freezing pipes. In the spring, we turn the system back on, evaluate each zone, adjust heads and reset the controller.  Pacific Lawn Sprinklers strongly recommends that you also consider the Summer Efficiency Adjustment Program. This program allows us to identify repairs that may have arisen during the watering season and make important adjustments to your watering schedules to accommodate the hot summer months. Proper watering schedules in the hot summer months are critical to the long-term health of your turf and plants.

How difficult is it to alter the system in the future (add shrub zones, new deck, expand flower beds, etc.)?

Adding to or modifying a system is generally not a problem. Having valves manifold together, swing joints on each head, etc., are all done with this in mind. It is most important to plan with the initial installation so that expansion or modification is not a big expense.

back
